biden visits black wall street massacre site in tulsa
Joe Biden has become the first president to visit the site of the Black Wall Street massacre in Tulsa. It is the 100th anniversary of the tragedy which saw 300 people killed as buildings set on fire and black residents shot at by a police deputised mob. Thousands of residents were left homeless in one of the bloodiest episodes of racist violence in the US. Greenwood, Tulsa had become prosperous due to the oil boom of the 1900’s with many businesses owned by African Americans, however the town was left in rubble after the massacre. Biden will address the US legacy of racist violence, and the challenges to unity ahead, an administration official said. Biden cannot fulfil his promise to restore the “soul” of the nation without recognizing the complexity of U.S. history, the official said.
